DESCENDING PATHWAYS

Page 17.1

Objectives:

1. Draw, in some detail, the origin, course, and termination of the corticospinal tract, noting its position in each of the following structures: cerebral cortex, internal capsule, cerebral peduncle, pons, medulla and spinal cord.

2. What do we know about the function of the corticospinal tract, and what reflexes are tested to check whether it is functioning normally?

3. Explain why a lesion in the internal capsule (for example) will result (among other things) in a facial paralysis on the contralateral side which is characterized by the persons inability to smile on that side, while still being able to blink and wrinkle his forehead.
