CHAPTER 19

CEREBELLUM

Page 19.1

Objectives:

1. Be able to identify the three cerebellar peduncles in brain stem sections.

2. Be able to trace (at least hypothetical) cerebellar pathways involved in raising a full glass of water to the lips (for example). Include the pathways involved in:

(1) the cerebral cortex "letting the cerebellum know" that the initiation of a movement has been signaled

(2) the arm "reporting back" to the cerebellum the muscle activity during the movement

(3) the cerebellum "reporting back" to the cerebral cortex (via the thalamus) the progress being made

(4) making corrections, if the cerebellum has "detected" errors in the range, force or amplitude of the movement.
