TERM SEARCH
We are in the process of building this list of terms.
Note: it is comprehesive, rather than a specific review list for this course. However, it will link (1) to glossary entries for structures in the brain that you are learning, and (2) to a table that links in turn to example images that illustrate the structure selected. Later in the course we will have more links prepared, and you may find this useful for review of the items that you are learning.

Fissures (sulcus = shallow fissure: the terms
are often interchanged)
Gyri
Membranes
- lamina terminalis (ependyma + pia) membrane between rostral end of
third ventricle and subarachnoid space)
- meninges
- arachnoid (middle thin layer). Spans sulci.
- dura (outer tough, thick layer)
- pia (inner layer). Tightly applied to surface of the brain, forming
a pial-glial unit
- septum pellucidum (fused ependymal layers between lateral ventricles
in the midline)
Nuclei Diencephalon (paired)
Nuclei Telencephalon
- accumbens nucleus (at juncture of caudate nucleus and putamen)
- amygdala (large nuclear mass in rostral temporal lobe)
- claustrum (thin nucleus adjacent to the insula)
- septal nuclei = septum (basal forebrain in midline rostral to hypothalamus
-- continuous with subcallosal gyrus)
- striatum (forebrain basal ganglia)
Ventricles
- central canal
- cerebral aqueduct: (1 in midbrain between the third and fourth ventricles)
- exit foramina (3): ventricle to subarachnoid space
- fourth ventricle: (1, extending through pons and rostral medulla
- interventricular foramina: (2, one between each lateral ventricle and
the third ventricle)
- lateral ventricle: (2, one in each hemisphere)
- third ventricle : (1 in midline between the two diencephala)
